FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ACIR and DCIR?

ACIR (AC Internal Resistance) measures impedance at a fixed frequency (typically 1 kHz) using a small AC signal, which isolates ohmic resistance from polarization effects. DCIR (DC Internal Resistance) applies a brief DC pulse and calculates resistance from the voltage change, capturing both ohmic and polarization resistance. Both methods are used for cell sorting but serve different QC purposes.

What internal resistance range should I measure?

Most lithium-ion cells measure between 1 mΩ and 100 mΩ. VoltTest IR testers cover 0.1 µΩ to 3 kΩ, accommodating everything from large prismatic cells (low mΩ) to small coin cells (tens of mΩ). For cell matching, aim for ±5% or tighter consistency within a batch.

Can I use this tester for cell sorting on a production line?

Yes. VoltTest IR testers are designed for inline production use with measurement times under 100 ms per cell, RS-485/Ethernet connectivity for PLC integration and automatic pass/fail sorting outputs. They can be linked to capacity testers for combined IR + capacity grading workflows.

How accurate is the ACIR measurement at 1 kHz?

VoltTest ACIR testers deliver ±0.5% rd + 0.05% FS accuracy at 1 kHz, which is sufficient to detect resistance differences as small as 50 µΩ on a 5 mΩ cell — well within the resolution needed for battery cell sorting and quality control.

Can I integrate this with my MES or ERP system?

Yes. All VoltTest IR testers support standard communication protocols (RS-485, Ethernet, Modbus TCP) and include software drivers for MES/ERP integration. Measurement data including cell ID, resistance value, test time and pass/fail status can be automatically uploaded to your production management system.
